Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly those found in fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel, are another critical aspect of macular maintenance. Omega-3s are essential for the optimal functioning of retinal cells and have been linked to a reduced risk of eye diseases. If you do not consume fish regularly, consider incorporating flaxseeds, chia seeds, or walnuts into your diet as alternative sources of Omega-3.

Zinc is another mineral that plays a role in eye health. It is critical for transporting vitamin A from the liver to the retina, which is necessary for the production of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Research has shown that zinc can help slow the progression of AMD. Foods rich in zinc include oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds, and lentils. Ensuring your diet contains sufficient zinc can contribute significantly to maintaining healthy macular function.
